Is Mortal Kombat 9 On PS5 And How To Play It

Mortal Kombat 9, released in 2011, remains a fan-favorite entry that revitalized the iconic fighting game franchise. Many modern gamers owning a PlayStation 5 wonder if they can revisit this classic tournament on their modern hardware. Unfortunately, playing Mortal Kombat 9 on the PS5 is not straightforward due to availability restrictions and platform compatibility limits.

Current Availability of Mortal Kombat 9 on PS5

Mortal Kombat 9 is not natively available on the PlayStation 5, nor is it currently downloadable from the PlayStation Store. The game was previously removed from digital storefronts globally due to expired guest character licensing rights. Additionally, the PS5's built-in backward compatibility only supports PlayStation 4 discs and digital games, excluding physical PS3 media.

Can You Stream Mortal Kombat 9 via PlayStation Plus?

In the past, players could access the rebooted fighting title through PlayStation Now streaming services. However, after Sony restructured the service into PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium, Mortal Kombat 9 was removed from the catalog. As a result, PS5 owners cannot stream or download the game through any active subscription tier at this time.

Alternative Methods to Experience Mortal Kombat 9 Today

To play the 2011 reboot today, players must rely on legacy platforms like the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. The game is also available on Xbox Series X and Series S consoles using backwards compatibility with physical or pre-owned digital licenses. PC gamers who previously purchased the Komplete Edition on Steam can still redownload and play it seamlessly.

Future Possibilities for a PS5 Release

Developer NetherRealm Studios has occasionally acknowledged fan demand regarding legacy ports. While licensing hurdles remain a challenge, future remasters or retro additions to the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog stay within the realm of possibility. Until an official announcement occurs, fighting game enthusiasts must look to legacy consoles or newer entries on the PS5 platform.
